The Black Cat's bar pours until 2 a.m., but its kitchen closes at 11. Since the week of October 20, a takeout window on the side of 3200 Sunset Boulevard has been serving tuna melts, meatloaf and milkshakes until 3 a.m.
That window belongs to Swingers, the diner that opened on Beverly Boulevard in 1993. Its arrival matters more than one new opening usually would. For years, the posted hours on Silver Lake's own stretch of Sunset have ended early, and most food past midnight has meant heading to the neighborhood's edges. Swingers puts a 3 a.m. kitchen back in the middle of the street, on a corner that has changed hands three times in two years.
Where the kitchens stop on Silver Lake's Sunset
Here are the posted hours of the neighborhood's better-known kitchens. The pattern shows up fast.
| Place | Address | Posted hours | Food after midnight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pine & Crane | 1521 Griffith Park Blvd | Closes 10 p.m. | No |
| Night + Market Song | 3322 W. Sunset Blvd | Dinner ends 10 p.m. | No |
| The Black Cat | 3909 W. Sunset Blvd | Bar to 2 a.m., kitchen to 11 p.m. | No |
| Bacari Silverlake | 3626 Sunset Blvd | To 12:30 a.m. Thu, 1 a.m. Fri–Sat | No kitchen cutoff posted |
| Swingers | 3200 W. Sunset Blvd | Takeout window 6 p.m.–3 a.m. | Yes |
The bars stay open later than the kitchens. 4100 Bar on Manzanita Street posts a 2 a.m. close, and so does the Silverlake Lounge at 2906 Sunset on Thursday through Saturday. Neither website lists a food menu. So on most nights, the neighborhood's evening can outlast its kitchens by two or three hours. Bacari is the one place on this stretch whose posted hours reach 1 a.m., and only on Fridays and Saturdays.
The late kitchens were always on the edges
The places Silver Lake has relied on after midnight sit just past its own commercial streets.
- Fred 62, at 1850 N. Vermont Avenue in Los Feliz, posts a 1 a.m. close Sunday through Wednesday and 3 a.m. Thursday through Saturday. It openly advertises food for "2am cravings."
- Astro Family Restaurant, at 2300 Fletcher Drive, was listed as open 24 hours in LAist's 2025 guide to late-night restaurants.
- Garage Pizza, farther west at 4339 W. Sunset Boulevard, posts hours to 2 a.m. Thursday through Saturday on its own site. LAist's 2025 guide listed 2:30 a.m.
Fred 62 is the obvious comparison, and it only reaches 3 a.m. at the end of the week. The Swingers window's announced hours of 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. come with no weekday split. That makes the Sunset and Descanso corner the latest posted kitchen inside Silver Lake. The places that used to fill that hour were on Vermont and Fletcher.
Three tenants, one corner
The building at 3200 Sunset has had a busy two years.
- All Day Baby, the diner run by Lien Ta and chef Jonathan Whitener, served its final day on December 15, 2024.
- Heavy Handed, a smash burger spot, opened on the corner in March 2025 and closed in April 2026.
- Swingers began takeout the week of October 20, 2026, and its dining room is planned for December.
The Los Angeles Times describes the move as turning the building back into a diner, this time Swingers' own kind. Owner Stephanie Wilson told the Times she wants to honor the late Whitener with a dish or some other memorial. She is talking with his friends and former colleagues about the best way to do it.
Why a Beverly Boulevard diner crossed town
Swingers opened in 1993 at the base of the Beverly Laurel Motor Hotel, at the edge of the Fairfax District. Wilson started as a longtime general manager and bought the business in 2020 to keep it open. She told Eater LA that she chose the Eastside because her regulars kept bringing it up:
"People would always comment things like, 'Oh, I wish you guys were on the Eastside,' or, 'Oh, I don't come so often because I moved to Silver Lake or I moved to Echo Park.'"
According to Eater, the Silver Lake menu matches the original. That means the California omelet with avocado, Jack cheese, bacon and tomato, buttermilk pancakes, the Swingers burger under sauteed onions, and a hot turkey sandwich, plus vegan and vegetarian options. Specials made just for this location are still being worked out. Wilson's current favorite plate is the chilaquiles.
What the window does now, and what December adds
For now, it's dinner-to-late-night food only, ordered at the window. Breakfast and lunch start once the doors fully open. Once the dining room opens, Eater reports the hours will run from 8 a.m. to 3 a.m. That would make the corner a breakfast stop as well as the last kitchen on the street.
Here is what the Times and Eater say the room will look like:
- Plaid booths, mosaic tile and wood-paneled walls, copied from the Beverly original
- Terrazzo floors with a retro feel
- A jukebox and a photo booth
- A bakery case with slices of pie
Swingers isn't the only new kitchen on this end of Sunset this fall. In mid-September, Briciola opened at 3131 W. Sunset in the former Spoon & Pork space. Chef Matteo Di Nicola and owner Mattia Raimondi serve Italian-Brazilian dishes like cachaça cavatappi and bolinho de bacalhau. Raimondi calls it "Italian-Brazilian fusion." Between the two, the Descanso end of Sunset now has an Italian-Brazilian dinner spot a short walk from a diner window open until 3 a.m. It's a stretch of the street that went through a lot of turnover over the past two years.
The Swingers window is open for takeout from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m. at 3200 Sunset Blvd., and the dining room is expected in December.
Corners like Sunset and Descanso shape how a block feels day to day, and we keep track of who's moving into them.
